A Good and Rare James I Oak Folding Top Table
The boarded top, retaining the original iron hinges, which allow the top to flip over and come to rest on the outward-swinging rear “gate”.
Beneath the top is a single drawer, with a moulding attached to the bottom edge, which continues around the legs and side rails.
The six legs are boldly turned columns, embellished with further ring turnings, and joined at the bottom by the original boarded “pot” shelf. The legs finish with the original cup feet.
Note – the highly unusual construction – the two front legs are set forward of the top and bottom rails to allow for a proper mortice and tenon joint – hence a stronger and more stable structure. Most folding or credence tables have the rails nailed to the side of the leg, which eventually work loose.
Outstandingly good burnished colour, original patina and condition.
English, circa 1620.
Width 41 inches, depth 20 inches, height 31.5 inches.
